McDonald, Ohio - William A. Walker, 88, died Friday at St.. Elizabeth Health Center. Mr. Walker was born April 18, 1917 in Girard, the son of John and Mary (Sullivan) Walker. William worked for 32 years for Youngstown Sheet and Tube and LTV Steel, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and the Girard VFW Post No. 419. Mr. Walker was a veteran of the U.S. Army and proudly served with the 158th Regimental Combat Team in WWII. He was a recipient of the Silver Star for gallantry in action during combat in New Guinea and the Bronze Star for meritorious service in the Pacific Theater. As a result of his service he was promoted from Technical Sergeant via a battlefield commission to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After the formal surrender of Japan, Mr. Walker served as a part of the Army of Occupation and finally returned home to Girard after serving abroad for 41/2 years. He is survived by his children, William J. (Linda) of McDonald and Timothy of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Sally Garska of Riverside CA; two brothers, James of McDonald and Ed of Kingman, AZ; and a grandson, Andrew (April) Walker of Shaker Heights, OH. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene R. Lawlor, whom he married April 19,1949 and who died Sept. 30, 2000; a son, Robert; and three brothers, John, Bert and Robert Walker. There will be services Wednesday at 9:30 am at the Blackstone Funeral Home and at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 pm Tuesday at Blackstone Funeral Home. Internment will be at Girard City Cemetery. |
